English at The Willows

At The Willows School Academy Trust, we are committed to providing an exciting, engaging and progressive English curriculum. We want every child to become an enthusiastic reader and confident writer, developing a lifelong love of books and a passion for writing.

Our English curriculum follows the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum for English (2014). To enrich this learning, we use the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education’s (CLPE) Power of Reading approach across our English curriculum.

Power of Reading introduces children to a rich and varied range of high-quality texts. Through creative and engaging learning experiences, pupils explore books in depth, develop their understanding of language and become inspired to read and write for enjoyment.

We use a range of teaching approaches to support pupils’ writing development and help them achieve their very best. These include book talk, role play, writing in role and purposeful writing for real audiences and reasons. High-quality texts provide stimulating and engaging starting points for writing, while teacher modelling, shared writing and guided writing help pupils to develop the confidence, skills and independence needed to succeed.

We want our children to see themselves as readers and writers: able to express their ideas clearly, use language imaginatively and take pride in their work.
