PSHE and RE

Jigsaw PSHE

What is Jigsaw PSHE?

Jigsaw PSHE is a comprehensive and completely original Scheme of Work for the whole Primary School. It brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning.

SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities are mapped throughout. All of these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in the world.

British Values

Jigsaw contributes, as a good PSHE programme should, to the British Values agenda very significantly, both through the direct teaching of information and through the experiential learning children will enjoy.

The 5 strands of the British Values agenda have been mapped across every Puzzle and every Piece (lesson).

We link our whole school assemblies and our Friday Assembly to the Jigsaw Themes and Values being taught and applied through the PSHE curriculum. We are proud of the way we promote emotional wellbeing for all our pupils through our Jigsaw programme which underpins the whole of our curriculum.

"Jigsaw is addressing the needs of children today"

The Jigsaw Approach has mindfulness underpinning it. This means that as well as teaching information and skills to empower children to learn now, and improve their life-chances later, we also aim to help them develop personal awareness. This enables them to observe their own thoughts and feelings, regulate them and make conscious decisions about their learning, behaviour and lives. It helps them to remain focused on the present moment, enjoy it and thrive in it. Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. Teaching strategies are varied, mindful of preferred learning styles and the need for differentiation. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. This enables each Puzzle to start with an introductory assembly, generating a whole school focus for adults and children alike.

The Jigsaw Approach in Elm Class

Jigsaw is written as a universal core curriculum provision for all children. Inclusivity is part of its philosophy. In Elm Class we tailor each puzzle piece to meet the needs of the children in our class. To support this differentiation many Jigsaw Pieces suggest creative learning activities allowing children to choose the media they work with and giving them scope to work to their full potential.

Designed as a whole-school approach, Jigsaw aims to equip children for life, helping them really know and value who they are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

Discovery RE

What is discovery RE?

Discovery RE is an enquiry approach to Religious Education for Primary Schools, which consistently delivers excellent learning outcomes. It provides a comprehensive set of detailed planning for Religious Education from Nursery to Year 6. Enquiry modules covering Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. Christianity is taught in every year group, with Christmas and Easter given fresh treatment each year, developing children’s learning in a progressive way.

The Enquiry Approach to Religious Education:

The key question for the enquiry is such that it demands an answer that weighs up ‘evidence’ and reaches a conclusion based on this. This necessitates children using their subject knowledge and applying it to the enquiry question, rather than this knowledge being an end in itself. Discovery RE focuses on critical thinking skills, on personal reflection into the child’s own thoughts and feelings, on growing subject knowledge and nurturing spiritual development.
