Reading

As a school we are passionate about reading and we are keen to instil a love for reading. We use a structured approach to teaching phonics by following the Governments Letters and Sounds. The resource aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.

 

We build on the children’s reading skills using the PM Benchmark Reading Programme, which has a positive impact on children’s reading progress. Children benefit from regular 1 to 1 reading with an adult, at least three times a week, as well as Guided Reading in small groups. Skills such as recapping on what children have read, predicting what might happen next and inviting opinion as to why, are vital to children progressing as readers and these skills are encouraged from our earliest readers.

 

Through regular assessments we identify children who are making consistent progress as well as those children who may need extra help.  Boosting reading Potential (BRP) interventions are used to further support children reach their age – expectations in their reading skills.
