Music at the Willows

Intent

  • Our intent is to provide a high-quality music education that engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music.
  • Our curriculum ensures pupils experience and understand what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres.
  • Our music sessions teach pupils to sing in tune, to understand how music is created, produced and communicated, and enable them to develop their curiosity for the subject by creating and composing music on their own and with others.
  • Pupils are also given every opportunity to develop their skills and appreciation of music through instrument workshops and performances in school.

Implementation

  • Our music curriculum ensures pupils are provided with opportunities to sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is embedded in the classroom through weekly music lessons as well as our singing assemblies and various concerts and performances.
  • We teach the Music National Curriculum, supported by clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all pupils.
  • Every child has the opportunity to learn to play the Steel Pans in Year 4 and various singing projects are undertaken throughout KS1 and KS2.

Impact

  • Pupils develop a love of music. Exposure to high quality teaching means pupils enjoy music, both from the performing and participation point but also through appreciation and evaluation of the work of others.
  • Pupils demonstrate their understanding of key vocabulary through pupil voice evident during lessons and class books.

Music Mark School

Music is an integral part of the Willows School Curriculum which we endeavour to incorporate into our every day learning. The Willows School has been awarded a prestigious Music Mark for 2020-21. This is a significant achievement and a direct result of the value that the school places on music and our commitment to providing a broad and balanced music curriculum.

Music Mark is the public-facing identity of the UK Association for Music Education. The organisation works to enable its members, and the wider music education sector, to deliver high-quality musical and social outcomes for all children and young people.

In addition to having this ‘badge of honour’, the school will also benefit from a number of other benefits including additional teaching resources and ideas to support the delivery of music to students. Throughout the year, our students will also experience a variety of visits, performances and workshops from various performance artists. Be sure to look at our gallery to keep up to date with our musical performances and experiences.
